Snow

It’s not the first snow for this winter, but the best we’ve had so far. All of Marburg seems clad in a thick white coat and the clouds high above us don’t stop covering us in just more glittery snow.

The snow makes my town of fairy tales even more magical.

Hat Progress and Petticoats

Yes, I’m already eagerly working on the hats. During the last days I went to the upper town more than once to get some materials – I love shopping for crafting stuff. Two of the hats are already cut, too, and one base is nearly finished.

I found some adorable deco elements, and the most wonderful fabric for Lilibeth’s and Jules’ hat bands, too. The moment I saw the bales I knew the material would be just perfect. I’m sorry that there are no photos, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise.

My other current project is the “clock pillow”, something I always wanted to sew since Teli showed me a picture of her cute felt pocket watch.

And, last but not least, today I ordered my first “real” petticoat! My old one wasn’t really appropriate for Lolita, so there had to be another one.

That’s it for now, and now I’ve got to hurry back to my projects so that I will have to show you more interesting posts stuffed with self-made goodness soon.

Bye!

Give-Away Results

I told you I hadn’t forgotten about the give-away, and that is absolutely true.

When I came back from my mother’s house where I went right when the give-away entry deadline was set, I indeed found some lines there from several kindred spirits who wanted to participate – three, to be exact.

I think I mentioned it before that this rate dampened my enthusiasm and self-esteem a little, but there was no point in being sad about it. I’d rather take it as a chance, and it gave me the opportunity for my final decision.

Which is: I’ll take all three.

Reason is that I couldn’t just decide which hat to pick, they all held a certain challenge for me! But to illustrate that I think it is the best thing to let you read the descriptions yourself (note: I translated two of them from German, so if one of the original authors isn’t okay with this, please tell me!):

Wolfskind

[...] A really dreamy exemplar! Not romantic but rather wildly moony, a hat that by design would not be worn by a human but maybe by someone from the “fair folk”,  a leprechaun, pixie, gnome or even a dryad. The colours probably be earthy which means brown, maybe darker green but also spots of other colour just to match the wee folks likings, whether  violet or bordeaux or what ever they like best at the moment.
The hat would never grow boring, one would always spot small details that had been “lost” there, whether faded writing or buttons that were found somewhere else. Maybe one of the creatures once got lost in a workshop and purloined a coppery shimmering piece of metal as it seemed to the creature like a real treasure although it’s only scrap to the humans.

I really could feel what Wolfskind meant by her description, and immediately my thoughts formed pictures of this hat. I simply had to do this, and if it was only for the challenge of the variety of possibilities!

Jules

A chocolatier top hat.
Spirally striped in mint and lemon.
At the hat band made of raspberry coloured silk taffeta and white tulle, looking like raspberry cream and sugar frosting, one can find polymer clay pralines and matching forks.
Everywhere on this top hat there is a shimmering and sparkling… Everywhere there’s  something new to discover, and everything is edible (or at least looks like it was)!
I want Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory on my head. ^^

Even though Jules will get a top hat anyway someday (he has this incredibly ice prince project at the moment, and the idea of making a hat for one of his costumes appealed to me in the very same second), I liked his idea so much that I took the challenge, too. Apart from that, the hat is (as far as I know) obviously meant for his Steampunk character Dorian Siskins who is in fact the eternal foe and rival of my yet-to-be-named “sweets, pies and fairy cakes” girl. Again, it’s a case of “I simply have to do this!”, at last because of the spiraling.

Lilibeth

A hat for the Peacock Queen

A hat for the Peacock Queen would have a black base. The adornment would consist of black cock’s plume gleaming in shades of iridescent green and peacock’s feathers.
In the front a filigree brass colored emblem would catch the eye. A hatband of dark green taffeta would be draped around it and fall down in two long ends at the back of the hat.

Lilibeth’s idea was totally different from the other two. Very classical and – in comparison – minimalistic, it is the total opposite of Jules’ and Wolfkind’s hats and every bit as sophisticated as my dear pen friend herself. And I know how hooked up she is with peacocks, at least since her splendid birthday party. Somehow I think this hat is the hardest challenge here as it is the most precisely described of the three. I’m thrilled of the thought what I can make of this setting!

You see, the decision wouldn’t have been easy if I had made one. So, the fact that I had only three participants gave me this chance – with at least four or five I would have been forced to pick a winner. But as it is, I’ve got three winners, which is somehow even better, I think.

Working on the hats will be grand, I know it. And you can be sure that I’ll keep you informed about the progress, as well!

So, off to be a mad hatter once again,

Yours truly

Hedgefairy

If I Were…

Another meme I stumbled upon on mochalove’s blog. Yep, I still think them nice and interesting, especially questions like these.

- If I were a season, I’d be Autumn.
– If I were a month, I’d be September or October.
– If I were a day of the week, I’d be Saturday.
– If I were a time of day, I’d be quite in the morning, around 10 A.M. or in the midst of evening around 9 P.M..
– If I were a planet, I’d be Earth.
– If I were a direction, I’d be North West.
– If I were a tree, I’d be an oak.
– If I were a flower, I’d be a wild rose.
– If I were a fruit, I’d be blackberries.
– If I were a land animal, I’d be an otter.
– If I were a sea animal, I’d be a seal.
– If I were a bird, I’d be a crow or a robin, depends on my mood.
– If I were a piece of furniture, I’d be a luxurious, huge arm chair.
– If I were a drink, I’d be milk.
– If I were a tool, I’d be an embroidery needle.
– If I were a kind of weather, I’d be windy and cold enough to wear pullovers or jackets but with a little bit of Indian summer sun beams trembling over the land to ad that certain golden shimmer to the world.
– If I were a musical instrument, I’d be a cello or a harp, I think.
– If I were a colour, I’d be a rusty, dark red.
– If I were a facial expression, I’d be glowing, bright eyes of childlike wonder.
– If I were an emotion, I’d be inspiration.
– If I were a sound, I’d be a cello, maybe. Or my own singing voice.
– If I were an element, I’d be earth.
– If I were a car, I’d be a Baby Austin.
– If I were a food, I’d be something with cinnamon.
– If I were a place, I’d be an old-fashioned sofa hanging on an old, big oak tree with thick ropes like a swing, with a book shelf made of wooden boxes right beside me.
– If I were a flavour, I’d be chocolate.
– If I were a scent, I’d be the scent of a burning fire that is in the air when it’s cold. That’s the smell of autumn and winter to me.
– If I were an object, I’d be an old book or something to craft with.
– If I were a body part, I’d be hands.
– If I were a pair of shoes, I’d be flat and made of sensible leather, with a Steampunk touch to my design and rounded toes, large enough to wear woolen socks, too, but fitting. And very comfortable.
– If I were transportation, I’d be an old train.
– If I were a cartoon, I’d be Mouse Guard. Or Calvin & Hobbes, depending on my mood.
– If I were a fairy tale, I’d be Caoilte Longfoot or The Beauty and the Beast or Snow White and Rose Red.
– If I were a holiday, I’d be Mad Hatter Day or Christmas.
Feel tagged if you want to. ^^

Plans Without Photos

I haven’t been writing here for a little more than two weeks (except of my list yesterday, sure), which is kind of a record, I think. I’m always a little sad when one of the blogs I read daily – about forty when I last counted – hasn’t updated for two weeks or more.
After all, like everyone to neglect their blogs, I had my reasons. But instead of telling you the not-so-exciting stories of what I did during the last weeks, I’d rather tell you what I’m up to in the upcoming few!

First of all, there is a Coppelius concert coming up in December. I don’t know what exactly to wear, and I fear I’ll have to sew something new. Maybe I can relate this project somehow to my new Steampunk clothing, which is also something you might read more about here soon.

Second, I’m re-organizing my sports stuff. As I’m in advanced training now, it’s time to get some kind of order into that mess of boxing gloves, trainers and fighting trousers! Plus, I definitely need a bag for my canes. Well there goes another hand full of sewing projects. At the moment, sadly, I’m kind of not allowed to go to training due to another sickness – again. But I decided to go to watch training, at least on Wednesday at Savate. It is incredibly salutary to watch the older ones at the assaut – no, that’s not a typo but the french term for our kind of combat in both Canne de Combat and Savate – and that’s something you really can’t do while being in an assaut yourself. So maybe I can learn something even if I’m not able to go into combat myself this week.

I’m also being some kind of creative with words – due to NaNoWriMo, but I think I’ll dedicate another post to that  – and pencils as I’m trying to revive my beloved Splinterworld project.

As a little life update I can tell you that we’ve got two wonderful new girls here living with us after Abigail and Kajal, Bambi’s rabbits, moved back to his sister. They are small, fluffy and incredibly sweet and go by the names Emma and Feline.
Oh, and the River Lahn is bursting its banks again thanks to the rain during the last week. Maybe it will still be as wild and fast as it was yesterday when I’m going for a walk tomorrow so I can take some pictures.

And last but not least, no, I didn’t forget about the give-away. I’ll soon reveal my plans concerning the wonderful descriptions I got and of course, I will let you read these descriptions, too.

10 Things I Love In November

  1. Dead Like Me. DLM was one of my favourite show some years ago. I stumbled over it again a week or two ago and even infected Jules, Bambi, the Satyr and the Scoundrel with my affection for the black humour and the weird characters of this small treasure in American TV history.
  2. NaNoWriMo. I’ve got to admit that I’m terribly behind the schedule, but I still like the idea of writing a 50.000 word novel in only 30 days. If you’re participating and like to add me as a writing buddy, don’t hesitate, I’ll be honoured (you can find me by the name Hedgefairy. What a surprise!).
  3. A Brand New Day from Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog. We all know that Neil Patrick Harris has a great voice. And it’s just so dramatic. And wonderful. It makes me want to sing this somewhere in public. Or at least to my in-game arch-enemy Mr. Siskins at a Steampunk LARP. The music of the whole show is grand, but I really think that A Brand New Day is my favourite. And I love the cast. If you haven’t watched it yet you should definitely catch up.
  4. Newts. They are incredibly cute, aren’t they? I started to read more about them due to my NaNoWriMo project and remembered how I used to watch them in the ponds at our well in the woods and catch the tadpoles.
  5. My “Lonely Tea Bag” Collection. It all started when my mother gave me a tea advent calendar. I kept the leftovers in a pretty bowl I once bought on my first Festival Mediaval and now it is nearly too small. But the sachets alone are perfect for one cup of steaming hot happiness.
  6. Fruit Loops. Unhealthy as hell, I know. But maybe I just love them so much because my mother would never allow them when I was younger. Plus, they look perfect in the jar where I keep them.
  7. Snipe Paterna. I think I’ve never fallen in love with shoes like this before. The half hiking shoe, half trainers look, the material, the lacing, everything is perfect. I tried to order them, but nowhere in the internet I can find my size in the colour I want. Curses!
  8. Typewar. A perfectly nerdy online game. Can YOU tell the difference between Arial and Helvetica New?
  9. Full Hazel Nut Chocolate. Jaw crackers. Great.
  10. Flappers. Sure, some of them (if not all) were terrible brats that I wouldn’t want to be a mother of, but somehow they were really, really cool. Ah, sorry, the cat’s pajamas, I mean. I always kind of liked the look although the dresses are mostly unfitted. The Clara Bow lips and layers of pearls made up for that, definitely. After I read Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella, I took a deeper interest in the subject and finally stumbled over a semi-academic book on it in a second-hand book shop. And now I’m here, reading about the escapades from about 90 years ago, thinking that most of the “scandalous” starlets out there could even learn from these girls that could be their great-grandmothers.
