Quick and Dirty

Yes. They still need a new home.

Maybe I sould admit my defeat. Maybe I should just keep them. Or maybe – and that’s what I’ll actually do – I’ll give them to the first person to comment on this post.

So hurry up, I want to ship these today!

Edit: There is already one comment below, but as it was a fun post by Centi the herbal set goes to comment no. 2!

Drawing Winners (Again)

After none of the former winners sent me an E-mail with their adress or a note of any kind I drew new ones.

The herbal set goes to San of Wunderliche Welt, the floral one to Centi of Centi

Bastelt. Congratulations!

Please send your mail adresses to the.girl.from.the.hedge[at]googlemail.com or to my NuS account via personal message (I prefer the latter).

I hope you want them. ^^

Buttons and Brooches

Finally something crafted again! Small, though, but no less.

1. From Hedgefairy with Love. Well, I had these pretty stickers lying around, and my huge problem with stickers is that if I put them somewhere, they’re gone! So, I made brooches out of them, and those that were too small for the needles got envelopes to stick on. I also planned to put a drop of sealing wax on one of the envelopes, but didn’t make it there in the end.

2. Roses and a Bike Button. The badge is another sticker, and the roses are the same that I used for decorating my hat for the visit at Lilibeth’s (I still don’t have the pictures, sadly, but there is a certain chance I’m going to get some of them at the weekend!).

3. Pretty Papers. My favourites, actually. I often buy scrapbooking paper for no special use, as bookbinding stock for example, but these two motifs were too beautiful to let them rest in one piece among the other papers.

Back Home for The Weekend

Actually, back at my mother’s home. The weekend started with quite an adventure when I happened to take the wrong train on Thursday evening and nearly went to Heidelberg! As much as this is my destination for the weekend after next, I was not so amused and got off the traing as soon as I noticed (which was two stations before Heidelberg, actually). I was so glad to come home after this (about two hours later than planned…)!

On Friday I went shopping for fabric together with Jules at one of the biggest open-for-public fabric stores in Germany. I sadly didn’t find the fabric I want for a planned dress, but instead the fabric I imagined for the pirate swap I’m in at the moment (it’s very cliché) and a green cotton I originally wanted to order via aethernet. Plus, some sequins border for the aforementioned dress, and five really pretty buttons of which I don’t know what to do with yet.

Aren't they great?

After we were back in town (fabric store is set in the periphery) we went to the mall, as it’s some kind of very girly tradition of ours. I wanted a new straw hat ’cause my old one isn’t that pretty anymore and going to fall prey to my project frenzy soon, anyway, but wasn’t able to find something flattering, so I’ll have to rely on Marburg for that.

Instead I ended up with 400 champagne-coloured faux pearls from the deco store, a small pouch for ma camera or such which I mainly wanted because of the cute, steampunk-esque motif of dancing mice on a gramophone and finally a t-shirt with something that looks like a cuter version of a skelanimal rabbit (even my grandmother thought it cute!) which will be perfect for the take on Punk Loli I’m planning.

Saturday I spent mainly playing A Vampyre Story (and finished it, too. Part two, here I come!), and in between game sessions went to the museum at Johannisburg Castle together with my mother. They had a small exhibition about celtic artefacts found in the local area, but I spent most of the time there taking pictures of the wonderful re-arranged princely rooms stuffed with the most exquisite furniture from ca. 1800 (which might qualify for a post of its own).

After a bath (with real light! Yay!) and breakfast with my mother I drove back on Sunday or better was brought back to Marburg which was quite necessary as I brought some things with me from my old room. And by now I’ve got two new book shelves! But I’ll save them for another post, I think.

Coming close to the end of this post I wanted to apologize for the lack of updates lately. I was so buried in projects and the beginning of the new semester that I had no time (and sometimes nerves, too) left to write much. I hope that it’ll change to better now. I still have projects galore but am eager to document them as well as finally fulfill some of my Daring Deeds!

So, you’re going to hear from me!

10 Things I Love In September

  1. Rose Hip Tea. I drink that stuff by the gallon for I love the slightly sour flavour and the dark red colour. And wild roses. It’s way better than the tap water here, at last.
  2. Warmer Blankets. When it came to September this year I noticed that I needed some. At some days during the last weeks I was really tempted to turn on the heating. The Scoundrel was so nice to bring one of his woolen blankets here (when he stays over he wanted one of his own), so I don’t have to be cold anymore.
  3. Chilly Air. Even though it demands thicker bedding and woolen pullover and socks, I love the weather here at the moment. The air is filled with that certain scent of falling leaves and cold water from the river and the fog rises in the streets in the evening…
  4. Our New Spice Shelf. First I wanted to build one myself, but when I went though some of the old stuff in our attic I stumbled across one and now our spices don’t have to crowd the working surface in the kitchen anymore.
  5. The Instrumental Parts of Black 47′s Funky Céilí. I’m having a folk phase again at the moment. Ignore the text, ignore the weird hair of the singer, just mind the instrumental parts. Did I mention that I want uilleann pipes? No? I want uillean pipes.
  6. Henna. I dyed my hair back, of more precisely, Teli did. Finally, I’m a redhead again! The henna is incredibly great for hair care, I even had my hair tips cut before and the hairdresser was baffled how strong and healthy my hair was after two years of no cutting at all.
  7. Velvet. I definitely have to extend the velvet bodice part of my closet. The heavy fabric is just so lovely when the weather gets colder!
  8. Beatrix Potter. I read through my copy of Peter Rabbit again at the beginning of the month, as the Scoundrel didn’t know it yet. I love the way Beatrix Potter illustrated her world, it’s just so full of details but not too brimming over. There is a quite new biographical film about her, too. I think I should watch it some day.
  9. The Fabric For My New Curtains. They are to be sewn yet, but the fabric is covering my door at the moment where I hung it to dry.
  10. Cover Buttons. Isn’t it nice to have buttons that match your clothing? I made some for the planned Honoria costume and think about using some more in upcoming projects of mine.

Favourite Words In September

Only English words today, I don’t know why… anyway:

  1. Haberdashery – Isn’t that word and his content great?
  2. Twirl – It sounds so warm and green with a little orange to me… and a little off-white.
  3. Pig – I like pigs and I like the word. What more to say?
  4. Cradle – An old-fashioned one, of course. Maybe with a sheepskin in it, maybe made of woven willow, with a baldachin or wheels.
  5. Enchanted – I originally wanted to pick disenchanted but I found it to dark and sad for a list like the above. ^^

Worn-Out Gold And Roseleaf Hues

At the weekend I went to my favourite haberdashery together with Jules to get some lace and buttons for Honoria’s outfit. Finally, I had to buy some other buttons yesterday again, but the shopping was definitely worth it – surely I’ll find another purpose for the spare ones.

The quarry is as follows:

  1. A group picture. I love how the colours of the things match though it is complete coincidence!
  2. Four coat-of-arms buttons with a jesters cap.
  3. A pair of flowery print tights I’m definitely going to wear at the Steampunk con as, if all goes right as I want it to, it will match my dress perfectly.
  4. Three gilded buttons. Two of them will be made into earrings, I just need some stud bases.
  5. Eight and a half meters of bobbin lace in a very light greyish hue.
  6. Five Coraline-or-shomewhat-else-cliché-ish buttons.
  7. A necklace from Claire’s. It was on sale, and even though I’ll never wear it in this shown form I’m going to tear it apart and make some new jewellery out of it. Two of the pieces even match the earring buttons from #4 so they’ll most probably end up in my Steampunk attire.
  8. Another two and a half meters of linen bobbin lace. Isn’t it wonderful? I don’t even know what I want to make of it, but I had to buy it.

The yarn in the first picture I only got because I liked how the colours looked together (something I definitely inherited from my mother). That’s quite unreasonable, but not that insensible when one spool is on the bargain price of 10 cent.

Hare, Fox and Cotton

I like the title, it could be the name of a painting, too.

Today I went to get some fabric for my new apron. I love skirts and dresses, but most of them – also those that I’ve sewn myself – have no pockets. So, the plan is to sew a couple of aprons that suit Lolita, Steampunk and Hedgefairy in equal parts. After all, girls wore aprons during the last centuries to protect their clothing. So why shouldn’t I?

100% Winter Cotton

I also got some of the material for Jules’ birthday present which is due at the 5th of May but I won’t show it here ’til then. Maybe one or another hint, but nothing more!
Oh, I’ve got a new pet keeping watch over my pirate’s treasure:

Actually, the jar is a punch.

The buttons are for some steampunky jewelry or hair combs. I immediately fell in love with the motif as I spotted it:

One, two, three, four, five, Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the way to Dublin, Whack fol la de dah.

In fact, Rocky Road to Dublin in a The Dubliners version was part of the Sherlock Holmes Soundtrack and appeared in one of the most formidable scenes.

Abigail, one of Bambi's rabbits, sat on my bed and watched the clouds go by outside the window... Another hare, kind of!

Grey Buttons, Grey Clothes

Grey is a wonderful colour. There are so many shades of grey, light and dark, brown and black, warm and cold, green and blue. My bathing suit needed new buttons, so I used those that I had left over from a pair of shorts that I had to throw away (but not without rescuing the parts that could still be of use!). I like the result. Maybe I should make a matching patch for the right hip, featuring a sea monster…?

Yesterday evening at 11 P.M. I went to the movies with Bambi to see the no-so-new-anymore Sherlock Holmes film. We had planned this long before the exams but due to my illness at least I had no chance to go and as my flat mate is a gentleman he didn’t go either.
The film itself was really nice. I could go on for hours about how I loved the setting and the (grey!) costumes and the witty quarrels between Holmes and Watson and Watson’s dog Gladstone and the detailed fighting scenes including Holmes’ declarations, but I won’t. But I think I’ll get me the DVD.

I still have a small ball of grey wool left that I’ve spun. I think about turning it to a crochet necklace-scarflet-hybrid like these, from Mademoiselle Chaos & Sister Infinity.
At the moment the wool is being steamed over a cauldron in the hedge kitchen for straightening (hand-spun, unplied wool tends to curl and twist), with a little wild rose oil added to the water. I don’t know what effect this may cause or if will do anything at all but I thought it was worth a try.

What I did during the last two Weeks

Remember that I told you about the lucky bag swap? The parcel arrived yesterday, only one day after I took it to the post office. SleepingTime, the recipient, liked it and so I think I’ve got the permission to finally post some pictures here.

The Lucky Bag itself.

I took stars as a theme, nautical ones, to be specific. Not only do I like this motif very much but also SleepingTime mentioned her love for stars of every kind and fashion in her swap profile.

Card and sweets.

I love to follow a certain continuity with colours, symbols and writings. The sweets are raspberry sherbert bonbons called chuckle pellets and match the red I used for the flowers and some of the content.

Buttons.

These were the first things I made for this swap when I was still very weak and bedbound. SleepingTime wrote that she liked stripes and the colours red and turquoise. We are a crafts forum after all, so I decided to draw needle and thread, too.

Bookmark.

The needle-and-thread theme again, this time with the same flowers as on the card and scissors. And stars, of course.

The bag was the “large” thing I made for the swap. Strangely the colour matches SleepingTime’s medieval dress nearly exactly, at least this is what she told me, and I didn’t even know about this dress!

I really like how the embroidery turned out. The yellow parts are three layers of different yarns each and the turquoise tendrils are not only striped with the lightest yellow bead yarn but also decked with glass beads.

The design is meant to be quite medieval inspired but I think I’ve inserted quite a lot of my own hedgefairy style.

I used the same thread for the bookmark, also with these glass beads sewn around. The embroidered stars are simple pentagrams with stitches at the crossings of the lines in a slightly darker yellow.

Finally, the last project for the lucky bag: A leather bracelet and matching earrings again with nautical stars, twines, flowers and read thread. I kept the pattern I made for the wristband so I will be able to make one of these for myself. The leather is quite thick and soft at the same time and was very easy to pyrography as soon as the soldering iron was hot enough.

I hope that SleepingTime will take pleasure in these things for a long time and am really glad that she likes them.

I should really post more about crafts here.
