Finished Things Saturday: Crystal in the Rough

Clear quartz (Bergkristall in German, which means “mountain crystal”) is one of my favourite minerals ever. As much as I like rose quartz and amethyst and citrine and calcite there is something about clear quartz that makes it special to me. Maybe it’s the spiky form in which it grows, maybe it’s how clear it is and how you can see everything inside. I don’t mind my crystals being battered or cloudy or somehow imperfect.

I made all of these quite a while ago but never showed them to you. The big one on the leather string is from a vendor back in Marburg, I think, while the smaller ones are from a flea market in Amsterdam.106_2089This one is the closest thing I own and wear to a choker. Most of the time I’m not too fond of things too close around my neck but this one is okay. The wire is recycled from old champagne bottles – Scoundrel used to detangle them as a child and once gave me a whole small box of them, neatly wrapped up.106_2083I usually wear different earrings on each side (when I wear two at all) so I only ever have to make one if I make some.106_2091I love the rough part at the top of this one. I wrapped it up very casually, just the way I think a witch with very little nerves for thought-through finery would. Which I basically am most of the time.106_2092106_2096What’s your favourite kind of crystal? I’d love to know, leave me a comment!
Have a wonderful weekend!

One Dress, Three Fits 1

If you have ever had access to fashion magazines and even read one or two of them you might already be familiar with this concept: Take a few basics and then build more than one outfits around them. I did something similar with a suitcase full of things before, but now it’s about only one dress.
A few weeks ago Verdinium challenged me to create three budgeted outfits with one dress, and I was bored and happily obliged. We decided on themes – classic/retro, dark and comfy/casual. And, of course, things I’d actually wear myself (at least mostly).

I set myself a 100,-€ budget and got to work. By now the dress I worked with was marked down (hm, this might be a good opportunity to get it myself…), and it’s this one. It looked basic enough to work with different styles yet was not too boring and had a bit of detail (read: lace).

One Dress, Three Ways 1: Elegant

I started with something rather classic. I’m a big fan of the pleather shoes – I probably wouldn’t wear them myself, but I think they are cute and far too rarely seen nowadays. There’s also a bit of whimsy going on with the tights and the key necklace to make it less conservative. And I opted for a chunky oversized cardigan rather than something more sophisticated to go with the jersey dress. This is supposed to be comfortable, after all.
I’d imagine this would be a nice outfit for an afternoon in the library or a pretty café.
One Dress, Three Ways 1: Nightshade

Nightshade could also be called strega, or gothpunk, or something like that. I tried to make an outfit for something a bit more Shadowrun, hardened, but not too hard. Maybe a city witch?  The lace on the dress and the dangling earrings break the hard lines and the different textures – the leather (also the details of the boots), wool and dark grey jersey of the hoody make it more interesting.
One Dress, Three Ways: Cute Casual

This is obviously the one I’d wear on a daily basis. It’s a shame that I couldn’t find a shawl with a badger print, but other than that I’m happy. It has comfy shoes, dainty details (the dandelion necklace and the lantern earrings), house colours and chunky accessoires like the leg warmers and the flannel. And that Head Girl pin I’ll get some day, even though I think that antique silver would have been prettier with the yellow, but nevermind.
I hope you enjoyed this post, somethings like this might happen again.

Things I Wear: Rioty Witch Kid

Scoundrel shaved my sidecut yesterday. I love the scratchy feeling when my hair is just half a centimeter short.

As you can see I’m at my father’s place at the moment, breathing city air again. Today I had family lunch and tea appointments and went thrifting afterwards so I went with something rather comfy.

I took the pictures on the sofa because it was the place with the best lighting at the moment. The first one in particular is still quite grainy, I’m sorry, but it couldn’t be helped.

Rundown:

  • T-shirt: H&M
  • soot pixie dress: selfmade
  • shirt: thrifted
  • leggings: H&M
  • leg warmers: thrifted
  • drop necklace: urban outfitters
  • mantra ring: india shop in Amsterdam

10 Things I ♥ in June

IMG_6938

  1. Strawberries on my window sill.
  2. My LARP tunnel vision. Since the season has started again every time I go shopping – and it doesn’t matter where, groceries, clothing, home supplies – I think, “I could use that, and make this of that and that and that would make a great camp addition…”, and I’m loving it
  3. The art of Joe Fenton, especially his sculpting. I wish I could do things like that! His surrealist drawings are really impressive, too. Find his website here.
  4. This 100 year-old fairground organ rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody. I’m a big fan of the slightly creepy sound and pictures that are connected to this kind of music. Carnival and fairground aesthetics? Yes, please.
  5. Chell’s Romper from Welovefine. I’m a huge Portal fan and I love working clothes. I might need one of these someday.
  6. Adventures of the Gummi Bears is my go-to falling asleep cartoon at the moment. It’s also a big part of my childhood when I used to rush down to my grandparents’ flat to watch it every night at 6 PM.
  7. A 101 on Foraging for Food.
  8. Angela An’s art. It’s moriesque and strega-ish and really pretty, too. She’s here on tumblr and here on bigcartel.
  9. Hobbitat. A tiny house company? That’s a great idea for all the folks who’d love to live small but don’t have the time to build a tiny house themselves. Also their designs are adorable.
  10. My new freelance project. Can’t tell much yet but I’m so excited to work on it!

Things I Wear: Ashes and Leather

IMG_5349

I went to Frankfurt today to go shopping with Jules – mainly Lush, and some crafting material -, and this is what I wore.

IMG_5351

Outfit rundown:

  • leggings + longsleeve: H&M
  • dress: selfmade
  • hat: thrifted
  • shoes: vintage hand-me-downs
  • bag: Primark

IMG_5352

  • coat: Promod
  • scarf: hand-me-down
  • fingerless gloves: local shepherd
  • IMG_5361
  • crystal necklace (long, not in the blurry detail picture that wasn’t supposed to be one): selfmade
  • hag stone necklace: self-found and -made

I only painted my lower lip today, it looks somewhat strange, but I like it. It’s sadly already gone in the detail picture, but maybe I’ll reconstruct it sometime.

Overall, I like this outfit and I was dying to show that dress ever since I made it. It’s one of my favourite pieces for everyday wear, truly.

Things I Wear: Pomegranate Town Witch

IMG_5170

People tell me to smile more. I try to smile more on pictures, seriously. It’s just that my sort of smile looks like a neutral face, while my neutral face usually seems a little bit angry or annoyed.

I went for a town witch look with this one. I think I should add a cape next time, or maybe a shawl, and far more trinkets, but in general I do like the look.

Rundown:
– dress, skirt: thrifted
– boots: Dr. Martens
– corset: gift from Verdinium
– hair pieces: Claire’s, Colosseum
– gloves: local shepherd
– crystal necklace: selfmade
